How to Prevent Gum Disease Before It Becomes a Serious Problem

Gum disease progresses silently. By the time you notice bleeding, swelling or bad breath, the infection is often already affecting the bone that supports your teeth. That is why prevention — not treatment — is the single most important conversation we have with patients at Dentivo.

The first line of defense is mechanical: thorough brushing twice a day for at least two minutes, and daily flossing below the gumline where a brush can't reach. Most people rush this part. If you slow down, you win.

The second line of defense is professional. Even diligent brushers build up calcified plaque over time. A professional cleaning every six months removes the deposits your toothbrush cannot touch, and gives your dentist a chance to spot trouble before it starts.

The third line of defense is lifestyle. Smoking dramatically increases the risk of periodontal disease. Uncontrolled diabetes, stress and poor nutrition all make gums more vulnerable. Small changes — hydration, reducing sugar, managing stress — add up.

If you already notice gum bleeding, don't wait. Early intervention with a deep cleaning almost always reverses gingivitis. The longer you wait, the harder the fix.
